What is an IP Camera?

An Internet Protocol (IP) or Network Camera is a digital video camera which is commonly used for surveillance purposes. Unlike analog CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) which transmits video via cables, an IP camera sends and receives data via through the Internet. The two types of IP cameras are Centralized IP Cameras which require a video recording software for video management and Decentralized IP Cameras which does not require a video recording software and makes use of a built-in recorder instead. With today’s Intelligent surveillance system, IP cameras are often paired with video management software and applications for video analytics.
