A new initiative aims to fit ships and drill rigs with advanced video systems with the Maritime Vision System, which will enable naval vessels to be safer with all the advantages of open platform video technology.
Milestone Systems, the open platform company in IP video management software (VMS), supports the initiative of Last Mile Communication to fit ships and drill rigs under a safe maritime working environment, with advanced video systems based on Milestone XProtect.
Together with the Norwegian naval service provider Westcon Power and Automation AS, Last Mile Communication delivers an end-to-end video solution to attend to harsh nautical milieu, based on Milestone XProtect open platform technology. Milestone proved once again its incomparable performance within challenging environments, as it is able to withstand high levels of corrosion, vibrations, shock and extreme temperatures in a maritime setting. Unlike land-based solutions delivered in regular environment, Milestone XProtect is able to go beyond what is expected from a surveillance solution, exhibiting high resiliency and providing non-stop operations.
In a naval context, surveillance solutions are used for activities that involve a lot of risk. For example, digital videos are able to monitor and alert staff performing hazardous tasks, such as crew on deck or below who is using heavy machinery, and those carrying out maintenance during emergencies. Also, capturing crane operations via video enable people to operate at a higher level of safety and at the same time, assist crane operators to work with more precision and speed, as the video allows proper view of placement of loads. In addition, thermal cameras can also monitor equipment to detect overheating and spillage of oil or dangerous chemicals.
Milestone Systems has been actively supporting the Marine Visual Systems initiative from the very start. Based on Milestone XProtect Corporate VMS, Last Mile Communication’s Marine Vision System has been able to achieve high flexibility, easily adapting to each customers’ requirements. The video solution consists of infrastructure components from Westermo, and cameras from Siqura and Tecnovideo. Encoders from Siqura also control legacy analogue devices such as Hernis PTZ cameras. These analogue solutions lack the integration abilities provided by today’s digital systems. Using a digital open platform solution not only provides features such as video analytics, remote operations, and interconnected components, but also gives the option to choose the right hardware for different requirements.
The Milestone open platform technology is the core for our design of the Marine Visual Systems solution, which is globally available now. We have been able to create an extremely flexible and robust solution thanks to Milestone Systems technology. We are able to pick the optimal cameras and infrastructure elements for every situation. Come see this at the Nor-Shipping trade show in Oslo June 2-5.
This is a fantastic example of the power and dynamics in the Milestone partner eco-system, enabling innovation like that of Last Mile Communication to address new business segment needs with the best available technology on the market – now and sailing forward,” says Lars Wilson, Nordic Sales Manager for Milestone Systems. “We are convinced that video enabling the naval market will have very big benefits for improvements in safety and operational efficiency.
